NBA to Limit Use of Twitter
As twitter grows, the number of people using the microblogging service has grown as well. Celebrities of all kinds use the service on the daily basis, especially athletes. Fans actively follow their favorite celebrities via Twitter.
One set of celebrities using the service religiously happens to be NBA athletes. NBA players love the service, and the widespread use of Twitter by Shaquille O’Neal has prompted many other players to use the service themselves.
Athletes enjoy the service very much, and possibly too much in fact. The NBA plans to curb players’ use of the service, putting a ban on any tweets when games are in progress or about to start.
The NFL put a similar policy in place very recently, making it against league rules to post any kinds of tweets within an hour and a half of the beginning of any game time situation. Additionally, use is prohibited during the game itself (including half-time) and during any official press conferences held thereafter.
David Stern, the commissioner of the NBA, reassures us that none of this is too significant and anything they put into place will hardly be noticed. NBA players’ association officials, however, are worried that conflicting policies between the league and specific teams could cause confusion.
The use of Twitter has had a significant impact on the way that pro athletes are perceived. Shaquille O’Neal has most successfully used it to increase his fan base, with jokes and other entertaining commentary on a daily basis.
On another occasion, Charlie Villanueva, then with the Bucks, sent a tweet out to his followers during halftime of a Bucks game. This prompted controversy and criticism, as a player’s focus should solely be on the game he’s being paid exorbitant sums of money to play.
Regardless of its drawbacks, there are many reasons for NBA lovers to embrace the benefits of Twitter. The league realizes this, and will most likely arrive at a fair set of rules that satisfies both teams and fans.
